Signs Of A True Guru

When Bhagat Banarsi Das Ji (His dear disciple) first met Maharaj Ji, he started pressing the saint to permit him to stay with him to serve him. While he was doing so, he noticed that Maharaj Ji had his eyes closed but he was reciting something. His heart welled up with love on hearing the contents of the revealed couplets. Quickly he took out his notebook and started making notes. After the inspired spell was over, Gurudev opened his eyes and asked Bhagat Ji : "Why are you writing this?Don't you know all this will not leave you fit to work in this world?". To this Bhagat Ji said : "Maharaj Ji, I don't know what is happening. Sir I obtain great peace by merely sitting in your presence and there is such love welling up within me that i want to remain with you all the time and keep writing all that you speak."
Gurudev said: "It is very difficult to live with faqirs". Then he asked Bhagat Ji to read out what he had written. Here is an excerpt from that:

Ever-engaged in disciplined practice of holy name Unattached and indifferent to snares of Maya (illusionary world).

Ever-compassionate, ready to serve ; with the power of Unseen shabad ensconced in the heart ;

Having renounced the charms of body and mind, Remains immersed in the Absolute Unbaised, fair and truthful in speach.

Know all these as Signs of a true Guru. Treating all living beings the same way, showering on them knowledge of love and equality.

Such nobles ones recognise no caste or creed. Their only crieterion being true meditation.
